Reporter We're hiring reporters to join a newsroom that's building for the future — and we want a reporter who's excited to help figure out what our audience and our community needs most for their local news organization. This is a role for someone who loves being in the field, chasing a story, and getting it right. There will be plenty of general assignment stories to pursue, and we’re still solidifying what beats we most need to pursue. If you have a proven skill or a passion for following a specific beat, we want to hear your ideas. About the Valley News The Valley News is a digitally focused newsroom and 6-day-a-week paper serving communities on both sides of the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and Vermont. A reporter joining us now gets to help shape coverage as the newsroom grows. What you'll do

• Report original stories, from daily news to deeper enterprise pieces, on a beat we'll define together based on your strengths and our community's needs.

• Go beyond meetings and press releases to find the stories that reflect how people in this region actually live.

• Build real sources and relationships in the communities you cover.

• Write clean, compelling copy on deadline, and take the time that a bigger story deserves.

• Experiment with format — narrative, explainers, Q&As — rather than defaulting to the inverted pyramid every time.

• Build your digital skills so you can add photography, digital infographics and maps when your story needs it. 

• Work closely with editors and other members of the staff who want to make your work better.

• Contribute to newsletters, social strategy and other ways we reach readers beyond the printed page.

Who you are

• A reporter, at any stage of your career, who's serious about the work and eager to grow .

• Curious by nature. You see the world around you as a story waiting to be told.

• Comfortable working across print and digital platforms.

• Someone who wants real ownership of a beat, not just a rotation of assignments.

• Someone with ideas and a willingness to bring them to the table.

• Someone who sees AI as a tool that creates an opportunity to deepen reporting and find new stories we otherwise wouldn’t have found or told. We're exploring what AI can responsibly add to a newsroom our size — carefully, transparently, always under a journalist’s control and within our AI ethics policy.
